Blood vessels are an essential part of your circulatory system. They carry blood from the heart to every part of the body and back again, maintaining healthy levels of oxygenation. Large ones are called arteries, veins are similar but smaller, and capillaries are the tiniest. When the tiny valves that regulate flow through the veins don't operate properly, blood backs up and causes varicose veins or spider veins.
Because your body contains about 60,000 miles of blood vessels, it generally continues to function just fine without the strangulated ones. There is no reason to suffer the embarrassment of spider veins on your face or legs, or live with uncomfortable varicose veins. Peachtree Dermatology offers several safe, effective treatment options.
We use V-Beam and KTP lasers to eliminate dilated blood vessels and noticeable veins on the face, and small spider veins on the legs. The intense, focused bursts of light destroy the blood vessel without damage to surrounding tissue. Treatment is gentle and non-invasive.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Broad Band Light (BBL) therapies, though not technically lasers, work in a similar manner to eradicate unwanted facial veins.
Sclerotherapy is not a new procedure. It has been used to treat varicose veins for more than 150 years and it is still the best option for treatment of leg veins. In this non-surgical approach, a sclerosing solution is injected into the unwanted vein. The solution creates slight irritation inside the blood vessel causing it to shut down. Over the course of several weeks, the body absorbs the obsolete vein, and it disappears.
Usually up to three treatments are needed for clearance. Patients experience only mild discomfort, and occasionally a bit of aching immediately afterward. We recommend wearing medical-grade support stockings while awake for the 72 hours following a sclerotherapy treatment. Patients are advised to avoid high-impact exercise for 72 hours, although walking and low-impact activities are encouraged. There are no other restrictions.
